When should I have a dyslexia assessment?

You may be considering a dyslexia assessment for you or your child if there is a persistent difficulty developing literacy skills.  It might be that teachers have raised concerns about progress, or that you are finding studying increasingly challenging, perhaps often feeling unable to retrieve or process words.

How can a dyslexia diagnosis help?

An assessment is about much more than the diagnosis and, in some cases, it is not appropriate to diagnose dyslexia. Regardless of the outcome, the findings of an assessment can:

  • provide a greater understanding of why you / your child find certain things difficult

  • provide a profile of strengths and weaknesses

  • improve self-esteem and confidence

  • provide recommendations for further investigation and signpost pathways to accessing support

  • provide personalised recommendations for targeted support both in school and at home

  • provide recommendations for exam access arrangements

  • support an application for Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSA) at university.
